Tip for – Tourette’s

TIPS DEPENDING ON THE DISABILITY

Tourette’s:

Example:  Tim Howard is one of the most famous people in the world with Tourette’s Syndrome. The former Manchester United and USA goalkeeper actively ticks during important soccer games but also credits his condition with being able to help him during games.

Some symptoms of Tourette’s include motor tics and vocal tics. These tics usually cause embarrassment and discourage people from social environments.

In the 2014 World Cup, Tim Howard broke the record for most saves by a goalkeeper in a single match. In this high pressure game, Tim’s tics were more frequent, and he let them out while the ball was at the other end of the field and did his best to keep them under control when the ball was closer to him.

How to help: Due to tics, people with Tourette’s can feel embarrassed in front of their peers and become less confident around others. It is important to create a safe environment and educate teammates about the condition.

If somebody is nervous about their Tourette’s condition you should not put them in situations that they might not like to be in such as speaking in front of the team without warning. Educating teammates creates the best environment for somebody with Tourette’s to thrive in a sporting environment.
