Tip for – ADHD

TIPS DEPENDING ON THE DISABILITY

Example: ADHD is common in sports due to hyperactivity. One of the most famous examples in world sports is 23 time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps.

Micheal struggled with ADHD, specifically having problems with focusing and a short attention span. Micheal was told by teachers at his school that he would never succeed at anything as he couldn’t focus on anything for a long enough time.

Many doctors prescribe medication as the only solution to ADHD without trying alternatives like sport and diet.

How to help For people with ADHD, they might not be able to focus on training for a long period of time. This may be hard to deal with when a coach is trying to explain a training exercise to the team.  One solution for this is to spend less time talking about how a drill is performed and learning the activity on-the-go. Another example is if a participant is looking disinterested, to change the drill to make it more engaging.

Patience is a key skill for a coach and understanding why a participant is interrupting or not focusing can be used to better deal with these issues.
