Overcoming Barriers
Overcoming Barriers
Everything has a work around and everyone is different. Think about what you need and who can help.
-
- Transportation – Can a carer or family member assist you with travel training. Think about how you can get to the venue. Community transport, taxi, public transport are all options. Once you join a club, there maybe be a carpooling option.
-
- Accessible facilities – Ask the club if they are accessible and let them know what you require. Example a ramp, accessible bathroom, visual cues or even a communication tool.
-
- Building your confidence – By joining a club you are stepping outside your comfort zones. When you explore new experiences it is normal to feel uncomfortable, uncertain and anxious. You are not alone.
Don’t push yourself too hard and take small steps in feeling comfortable. By being positive and wanting to take the first step will help you overcome any challenges you face. Remember there are people around you that can help. You just need to ask.
-
- Meeting people. Clubs can offer solutions like a trainer, mentor or buddy systems that will help you meet people. Many sporting clubs also celebrate wins and have a social aspect to it.
